Snus in Vietnam: What the Word Actually Means Here

In Vietnam the word "snus" almost always means a tobacco-free white nicotine pouch, not the moist Swedish tobacco the word originally names. The two are different products made of different material, and the white kind is the one you can actually buy here. There is no counter to walk up to: it is ordered online, dispatched from Ho Chi Minh City, and paid for in cash when the courier puts the box in your hand.

This page is the practical version for anyone living in or visiting Vietnam: what exists here, what it costs in dong, how long it takes to arrive, how to spot a fake can, and where the law sits. Nicotine is addictive and none of this is for anyone under 18.

Two different products, one word

Traditional Swedish snus is ground tobacco leaf mixed with water, salt, a humectant and a pH regulator, heat-treated and packed loose or in small paper portions. It is brown, moist, and sits under the upper lip.

A nicotine pouch keeps that position and that format and replaces the tobacco with plant fibre, usually wood or eucalyptus cellulose. Inside the bag there is nicotine, fibre, water, flavouring, a sweetener and a pH regulator, wrapped in a white food-grade fleece — roughly the same class of material as a tea bag. No tobacco leaf, dust or stem at any stage.

Three things follow from that. The white pouch is dry rather than moist, so it produces far less saliva and no spitting culture grew up around it. The fleece stays white instead of browning. And what you taste is flavouring rather than tobacco.

Tobacco-free does not mean nicotine-free. The nicotine in a white pouch is still nicotine and is still addictive. It is the ingredient that was put there deliberately, and it is the thing the milligram figure on the label is measuring.

Why brown snus does not turn up here

Directive 92/41/EEC, adopted in 1992, prohibited the sale of oral tobacco across the European Community. Sweden negotiated an exemption on joining in 1995 and remains the only EU member state where brown snus is sold; Norway sits outside the EU and outside that ban entirely. So the line the Scandinavian makers built for export is the white one, and the white one is what travels.

The second reason is mundane: we do not stock brown snus, and no seller in Vietnam with a published catalogue does either. All 682 products we list are the white tobacco-free kind.

What is actually on sale in Vietnam

Counted from our catalogue on 6 August 2026: 682 products across 49 brands, each listed with its strength, format, barcode and price in dong. The deepest ranges are VELO with 46 products, ZYN with 42, LOOP with 38, CUBA with 31 and XQS with 28.

Three names on those shelves belong to old Swedish snus houses that now also run a white line, and only the white line reaches Vietnam: Skruf with 14 products, Lundgrens with 10 and Siberia with 6. If you recognise one from a tin you saw in Stockholm, the can sold here is not that tin.

On shape, the catalogue splits into slim (100 products), mini (48) and 534 where the maker states no format. The wide "large" portion format from Scandinavian oral tobacco is not something we carry. There are also pouches with no nicotine in them, in the 0mg range.

The number on the tin, and the trap in it

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Of our 682 products, 352 publish a nicotine figure per pouch and 330 publish none, because their makers state none — and in that case the strength field is left empty rather than filled with an estimate. Published doses run from 3mg to 25mg per pouch; the highest in the catalogue is a single product, NOIS Eucalypt at 25mg.

Then there is the trap. Some tins carry a far larger number — 70, 60, 50, 32.5 — and that number is not a dose. It is milligrams of nicotine per gram of pouch material, a concentration, and a pouch weighs well under a gram. Thirty-five products here carry a per-gram label: ICEBERG at 70mg/g and 50mg/g, MAGGIE at 60mg/g, GLICK at 50mg/g, NOiS at 50mg/g and 35mg/g, RAVE at 32.5mg/g. We publish no per-pouch dose for any of them, because converting one would mean inventing a pouch weight nobody publishes.

Nothing on the can tells you which unit you are reading. The letters are identical and the per-gram figure is always the larger, which is why the brands that sound strongest in conversation are so often the ones quoting a concentration. Siberia and White Fox are a third case again: their maker publishes neither figure, so there is no number to quote in either unit. Is snus legal in Vietnam?

Resolution 173/2024/QH15, adopted 30 November 2024 and applying from 1 January 2025, prohibits the production, trade, import, storage, transport and use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Oral nicotine pouches are not enumerated in it. Decree 371/2025/ND-CP set the penalties from 31 December 2025 — 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 VND for an individual using a prohibited product, with confiscation on top.

The Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms No. 09/2012/QH13 defines a tobacco product by reference to tobacco material, and a pouch containing no tobacco leaf contains none of it. Meanwhile the Ministry of Health's draft amendment dated 20 July 2026 adds a category of "other new tobacco products" and does name nicotine pouches in it, and Resolution 11/2026/UBTVQH16 moved that draft to the National Assembly session of October 2026.

That is a description of published texts, not a verdict, and we sell pouches, which makes us the last people whose reading of it you should lean on. What it costs, and how it gets to you

Every one of the 682 products in our catalogue carries a single variant listed at ₫250.000 a can, with no separate compare-at price on any of them. That is a fact about our price list rather than a market survey, and the price that binds is the one shown when you order. What it works out to per pouch depends on a pouch count the makers do not publish; the arithmetic is in the cost breakdown.

Stock sits in Ho Chi Minh City rather than overseas, which is the only reason same-day is possible at all. Orders placed inside the city before 2 PM on a working day arrive the same day by GrabExpress, for ₫25.000. Hanoi is 1–2 business days by tracked courier, Da Nang 2–3, and every other province 3–5, covering all 63. None of those windows survives Tet.

Payment is cash on delivery and nothing else — no card number, bank detail or e-wallet account is entered on this site. Someone has to be present with cash, and orders are confirmed by phone or Zalo first, so give a number you answer. Boxes go out plain, with no brand name or nicotine wording outside. Unopened cans can be returned within 7 days. Age is confirmed at the gate and again at checkout.

Counterfeits, and the thirty-second check

Counterfeit, refilled and relabelled cans circulate here, mostly through chat-app sellers and group buys with nothing published to check against. The checks work on a can from any seller: an intact factory seal that tears rather than peels, a 13-digit EAN barcode printed into the base that scans first or second try, a batch code and date printed rather than stickered, sharp small text square to the lid seam, a lid that clicks flush shut, and pouches inside that are uniform in size and count.

661 of our 682 products carry the maker's EAN, published on the product page so you can check the can in your hand against something rather than take anyone's word for it — ZYN Apple Mint Slim S3, for instance, is 5704420040770. Price is the other test, and the only one you can apply before the can is in your hand. What makes an unverified can worth avoiding is narrow and concrete: nobody can tell you what is in it, because the figure on a counterfeit label was printed by whoever printed the label. If you are only here for a few weeks

Cash on delivery means a parcel cannot be left at reception, so order to wherever you will be in three days and give the property name, room number and a landmark. Heat is the other thing: a closed motorbike compartment in the afternoon can pass 50°C, which dries pouches out within days. Keep cans sealed, upright, out of the sun and below about 25°C. What is documented is that nicotine is addictive, that it affects the cardiovascular system, and that gum irritation where the pouch sits is common with regular use. What is not settled is the long term: tobacco-free oral nicotine is roughly a decade old and the long-horizon research does not exist yet.
